How to Remove Skin Pigmentation

When you have dark spots on your face, skin discoloration is all you see when you look in the mirror. Even if you constantly get compliments about the color of your eyes and your bright, contagious smile, it can be difficult to feel beautiful when you’re self-conscious about your most prominent feature - your complexion.

Skin pigmentation can be caused by many factors, from sun exposure, to hormones, to aging. Regardless of how the dark patches appear, you’ll be happy to know it’s possible to dramatically improve the appearance of skin pigmentation at home without the use of chemicals, lasers, or painful peels. Here are a few natural ways to remove skin pigmentation and reveal an even, flawless complexion.

  • Lemon

  • The fruit you squeeze in your water bottle every day can also improve hyperpigmentation. Lemon is a fantastic source of vitamin C, which brightens the skin and helps fade dark spots. It’s also high in antioxidants, which help protect the skin from future UV damage.

How-to: Combine the juice of one lemon with two teaspoons of honey in a small bowl and apply it to your face. Allow the mixture to work its magic for 15 minutes, and then wash it off with warm water. Repeat twice daily.

    1. Aloe Vera

This versatile plant does more than soothe sunburn. Aloe vera contains a compound called aloin that helps lighten dark areas on the skin. The plant also reduces inflammation, which may help prevent acne-related pigmentation from occurring in the first place.

How-to: Combine two tablespoons of aloe vera gel with a half-tablespoon of raw honey. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes, then apply it to your face. Allow the aloe mixture to absorb into your skin for 20 minutes, and then rinse it off with warm water. Repeat daily.

    1. Orange

The next time you eat an orange, save the peel. Orange peel contains citric acid, which has been shown to inhibit the production of melanin - the pigment that gives the skin its color. Applying orange peel to the dark patches on your face can lighten them to reveal an even complexion.

How-to: Cut several orange peels into thin slices and spread them on a tray. Dry the orange peels in the sun for a few days, until they’re hard and completely dehydrated. Grind the peels into a fine, powdery texture and combine with a teaspoon each of lemon juice, honey, and milk. Apply the orange peel mixture to the affected areas of your skin and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Repeat three to four times a week.
