How to Keep Your Skin Hydrated in Winter

Winter weather, lower humidity levels, and indoor heating can all wreak havoc on your skin, causing it to become dry and flaky during the colder months.  But with a few adjustments to your daily routine and a commitment to proper skincare, you can have soft, radiant skin all year—even in winter. Take a look below at the following 6 tips for keeping your skin hydrated in winter.

  • Exfoliate
  • Winter skin tends to be dry and flaky, and many people think that’s a reason to stop exfoliating.  But exfoliation is actually an important part of keeping your skin hydrated in winter, as it helps to remove the dead skin cells that act as a barrier between your skin and your moisturizer. It’s important to choose your exfoliating products wisely, though, as harsh chemicals can exacerbate winter skin irritation.

  • Avoid soap-based cleansers
  • Soaps dry out skin, so they’re best avoided, especially during the winter months. Opt instead for gentle cleansers containing natural enzymes and plant-based ingredients that remove impurities without stripping the skin of its natural hydrating oils.

  • Keep showers short and warm
  • While long, scorching hot showers can feel especially blissful when it’s cold outside, the heat strips your skin of its natural oils. If you struggle with dry skin, it’s best to keep your showers short and the water warm rather than hot.

  • Moisturize intentionally
  • Using toner plus moisturizer while your skin is still damp from your shower is one of the best things you can do to help keep your skin hydrated in winter.  The toner restores your skin’s pH balance and helps bind the moisture to your skin.  The moisturizer can then penetrate easily, leaving you with soft supple skin, even in winter.

  • Humidify your home
  • Cold dry weather and home heating systems decrease humidity levels and dry out skin. And while you can’t change the weather, you can restore some of the humidity to the air with a humidifier.  Using it at night in the bedroom while you sleep can help keep your skin from drying out.

  • Eat your Omega-3s and other skin-hydrating foods
  • Dehydrated skin is one of the symptoms of an Omega-3 deficiency. Eating fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and herring can help replenish your body’s supply of omega-3 fatty acids and restore your skin’s hydration. Other foods containing vitamins and oils that help combat dry skin include nuts, avocado, and sweet potato.
